Whitespace Is Design, Not Empty Space

Look at your favorite websites. The ones that feel premium. The ones where you don't have to think about where to click.

Now look at yours. Is everything packed in? Text touching text? Buttons close to each other? Cards tight against the edge?

That's not a content problem. That's a spacing problem.

The 8px Grid

Every professional design system uses an 8-point spacing grid. Base unit is 8px. All spacing is a multiple: 8, 16, 24, 32, 48, 64.

Why? Because it creates visual rhythm. When everything follows the same scale, the interface feels intentional. You don't notice the spacing — you just feel that it looks right.

When you use random values — 13px here, 17px there — the interface feels off. Not because it's ugly, but because nothing lines up. Your eye picks up on it even if you can't say why.

Text Needs Room

Most people space text wrong. They use default line height (around 1.2) and tight margins between paragraphs.

Body text needs 1.5 line height minimum. Paragraphs need extra space below — more than the line height. That's how the eye knows where one thought ends and another begins.

If you're not sure if your spacing is right, squint at the screen. If everything blends into one gray block — it's too tight. If you can see clear groups of content with breathing room — it's right.

Don't Fill Every Pixel

A lot of designers are afraid of whitespace. "We paid for this space, we should use it." So they add more text, more cards, more sections.

But whitespace isn't wasted space. It's what makes the important stuff stand out. A big empty area around a call-to-action doesn't make the page feel empty — it makes the button feel like the only thing worth looking at.

The Difference

Two screenshots above. Same content, same colors, same buttons. The left one feels crowded and cheap. The right one feels premium.

The only difference is spacing.

No one ever says "great spacing." But everyone feels it when it's wrong.
