Why AI-Generated Websites All Look the Same

Why AI-Generated Websites All Look the Same

Open any AI-generated website gallery and you'll see it immediately. Dark theme. Blue-purple gradient. Three cards in a row. "Effortlessly streamline" hero text. A 3D blob floating somewhere.

They all look the same.

Why is that?

AI Trained on the Same Things

AI design models learned from millions of existing websites. It learned what's "common" and "safe." When you ask it for a landing page, it gives you the average of all landing pages it's seen.

The average is always middle of the road. Not too bold, not too weird, not too specific. It's the design equivalent of a consensus answer.

That's why every AI site has the same layout, the same colors, the same tone of voice. It's not bad — it's just not yours.

Generic Is the Enemy of Memorable

Here's the problem: if your website looks like every other website, people forget you in two seconds.

Your brand isn't "we're a SaaS company with a dark theme and blue gradients." Your brand is whatever makes you different. AI can't find that for you because it doesn't know what you actually do, who you actually serve, or why anyone should care.

Good design is specific. It has opinions. It says "this is who we are" in a way that generic design never can.

Where AI Slop Comes From

Most people use AI wrong. They type "modern landing page for a tech company" and ship the first result. That's it. No direction, no intent, no point of view.

AI gives you what you ask for. If you ask for generic, you get generic.

How to Use AI Without Getting Generic

If you use AI as a starting point and bring your own direction, it's powerful. Here's how:

Start with a point of view. Don't ask for "a modern landing page." Ask for "a landing page that feels like a 90s skate video meets a fintech product." The more specific and weird, the better the result.

Treat it as sketching, not final. AI generates rough ideas. You then take the part that works and rebuild it with intention.

Add the human layer. Color choices that have meaning. Typography that matches your brand. Interactions that relate to what your product actually does. That's the part AI can't fake.

The Advantage Now

When everyone can generate a decent-looking website in 10 minutes, the bar for "decent" dropped. But the bar for "memorable" went up.

The designers who win aren't the ones who use AI the fastest. They're the ones who know what to throw away.
